The adjustment of the gap between rolls in a rolling mill is primarily based on adjusting the roll pass, controlling the strip shape, supporting the rolls, and maintaining their fixed positions in the mill. The working load on the roll bearings is heavy and varies significantly, necessitating a low coefficient of friction for the bearings.
Once the product to be rolled is determined for the rolling mill, the linear speed of the mill can be essentially determined. The hardness of the raw material is measurable, and the deformation size of the incoming material into the mill is determined by changing its plastic deformation dimensions.
How to configure the rolls according to the pass design? Typically, newly installed rolling mills undergo a running-in process, during which the rolls rotate without load at different speeds in stages: 50%, 65%, 75%, and 85%. Different rolling mill models use different materials and specifications for the rolls based on the type of product being rolled.
For example, in a continuous casting and rolling mill producing 100 tons per day, the large rolling speed is 15-25 meters per second. The efficiency of rough rolling is 30%–40%, medium rolling efficiency is 50%–60%, and rough rolling efficiency reaches 95%. After the rolling mill is installed, the size gears of the gearbox and reducer need to mesh, and if the rolling speed is too fast, the torque will increase. After the rolling mill runs continuously for 30 days, stop the mill to check the meshing condition of the gears. Once everything is normal, the rolling speed can be increased.
Under normal circumstances, the rolling speed does not need to be adjusted regularly. The rolling rolls in the mill wear continuously during operation. To maintain controlled rolling requirements and stable mill operation, timely roll repairs are essential, and in severe cases, rolls may need to be replaced.
