In various working environments, the placement methods of rolling mills vary. This difference exists to facilitate the smooth progress of rolling operations and may also be influenced by spatial characteristics. If we use placement methods as a basis for classification, rolling mills can be categorized in several ways, also considering the sequence of workpiece rolling.
Single Stand Rolling Mill:
This is a relatively simple type of rolling mill. The entire process, from the beginning to the completion of rolling, takes place on a single mill. This allows for easier control of the rolling process.
Tandem Rolling Mill:
When two or more rolling mills are arranged side by side horizontally, they form a tandem rolling mill. It can consist of a single column or multiple columns. In contrast, a vertical arrangement of two or more rolling mills is referred to as a vertical rolling mill. In this setup, the workpiece is sequentially rolled in each mill until the process is completed.
Semi-Continuous Rolling Mill:
This type of rolling mill is composed of a group of vertical or horizontal mills and a group of continuous rolling mills. The main difference from continuous rolling is the absence of the group of vertical or horizontal mills. Instead, several rolling mills are arranged in a row in the rolling direction, allowing the workpiece to be rolled in multiple mills while maintaining a continuous rolling relationship.
Unconventional Rolling Mills:
There are two less common types of rolling mills: off-road rolling mills and chessboard-style rolling mills. The former is composed of two or more vertical rolling mills, allowing the workpiece to be sequentially rolled in each mill. The latter is a combination of several vertical mills and standalone rolling mills, arranged in a manner similar to a chessboard.
Choosing the most suitable type of rolling mill depends on various factors. On one hand, considerations include the type of workpiece, the material, and specific requirements. On the other hand, factors such as the characteristics of the working environment and space availability must also be taken into account for an accurate judgment.
