Steel billets coming out of the steelmaking plant are only semi-finished products and must be processed in a rolling mill to become qualified products. Continuous casting billets from the steelmaking plant first enter the reheating furnace and then, after repeated rolling in the roughing mill, proceed to the finishing mill.
Rolling steel belongs to the category of metal pressure processing. In simpler terms, rolling steel plates is like rolling dough with a rolling pin, where the material is repeatedly squeezed and pushed, resulting in thinner sheets. In the hot rolling production line, the billet is heated and softened, then fed into the rolling mill through the roller conveyor, and rolled to the desired dimensions.
Rolling steel is a continuous and uninterrupted operation. The steel strip moves rapidly on the conveyor, and the rolling mill equipment has a high degree of automation and power. Steel ingots from the blast furnace can also be turned into steel plates, but they first need to go through the processes of heating and rough rolling before being sent to the hot rolling mill. Using continuous casting billets simplifies the process.
Typically, the thickness of continuous casting billets is 150 to 250 mm. After dephosphorization and rough rolling, they enter the finishing mill through the roller conveyor. The finishing mill, consisting of seven 4-roller mills, is equipped with a speed-measuring roller and a flying shear to remove the head of the plate. The speed of the finishing mill can reach 23 m/s. The rolled products are divided into steel coils and ingot-type plates. After hot rolling, the thickness of the steel rail is generally a few millimeters. If users require thinner steel plates, they need to go through a cold rolling mill.
High-speed rolling mills have similarities to conventional rolling mills, but their goal is to obtain the desired standard dimensions of the rolled material through the rolling process. In the process of rolling steel, measures must be taken to improve the operating power of high-speed rolling mills.
